President of Shanlin Art and Painting Institute

Over the years, Ms. Shao Xiaocheng has committed herself to the inheritance, research and education of Chinese embroidery, silk tapestry and traditional Chinese painting. From a child, she has had a deep interest in the traditional Chinese art. Versed in embroidery and accomplished in painting, she has accumulated substantial and mature experiences over the course of more than forty years. She has a talent for paintings of all categories, from landscape, portrait to flower and bird. In the mean time, she is proficient in different styles of embroidery, such as Su Embroidery, Shu Embroidery, Yue Embroidery, Xiang Embroidery, Portrait Embroidery, Crisscross Stitching Embroidery, Gu’s Embroidery, double-sided art embroidery, and traditional folk embroidery. It is actually her high accomplishments in the traditional Chinese painting that enable her to enjoy the ease in the creation of the embroidery artwork, which fully displays her solid art attainments.

Started to learn embroidering from her family at the age of seven, Ms. Shao Xiaocheng could already undertake embroidery work independently when she was nine. From the age of 20, she has devoted herself to the study of traditional culture, reading history, traditional poems and essays and classical literature masterpieces. She also concentrated on the study of famous paintings from well-known painters of different historical dynasties and the famous carved seals in the history. As a diligent painting practicer, she also visited the embroidery research institutes throughout China during her spare time, and learned from folk artisans, which helped her to assimilate the strongpoint of different styles and master solid professional knowledge. After 25 years old, thanks to her profound cultural background and her unique comprehension of the embroidery art, she became adept at attaching historical, cultural and art connotation to her embroidery artwork, and she could perfectly apply the techniques of all famous embroidery styles, such as the four famous embroidery styles, crisscross stitching embroidery, portrait embroidery, archaized embroidery and Gu’s embroidery. Since 1997, she has committed herself to the education, research and creation of traditional embroidery, silk tapestry and traditional Chinese painting. Her students came from all over China, as well as Europe and southeastern Asia. At the same time, special effort was made in the study of the Gu’s embroidery of the Ming Dynasty. After ten years’ research, a conclusion has been reached that the reason why we almost lost the Gu’s Embroidery is not because of the stitching and techniques, but our negligence of its characteristic of integration of traditional Chinese painting and calligraphy, painting and culture, which opens a new door for the renaissance of Gu’s Embroidery. She also did a lot to bring the centuries-old Chinese embroidery culture into universities and in her courses she always emphasizes the interrelation between the traditional Chinese painting and the art of embroidery.

In 2002, she founded the embroidery major at the College of Archaeology and Museology, which runs under the Cultural Relic Society of China. Four years later, with the approval of the Ministry of Education of China, she set up a master program with majors in traditional silk tapestry and embroidery at the School of Ethnology and Sociology of Central University for Nationalities of China, which marked a historical contribution to the exploration, protection and development of the traditional tangible and intangible cultural heritage.

In August 2008, she was invited by the Asian Art Museum of San Francisco in the United States to participate in the exhibition "Power and Glory: Court Arts of China's Ming Dynasty". She gave lectures about the embroidery art, and also received interviews by the local medias.

While engaged in the education and research work, Ms. Shao Xiaocheng also spent plenty of time on the personal creation of paintings and embroideries over the years, which has made her an outstanding embroidery artist and painter.
